January 1 is the starting date for day-degree (DD)
accumulations used with the "shake bucket" scouting method for decisions on
spraying for weevil larvae. Field sampling need not begin until 150 DD have accumulated
from January 1.
Winter grazing of established stands to remove foliar
growth that accumulated since the last fall harvest can reduce overwintering egg
populations by 50-70% and result in lower numbers of larvae in spring.
